CITE AGM

Thank you to everyone who made the effort to attend the CITE AGM. A special thank you to Jan Campbell, Director of CIS, who addressed the group and to Tena Laing at The Sterling Hall School for hosting the event. We had 19 CIS Ontario schools represented! Attached are the minutes for your review.

CITE Conference

We have a great conference planned for Saturday April 20, 2013 at Appleby College. Jennifer Klein, Professional Development Director of the World Leadership School will give the keynote address. In addition, Marina Nemat, author of Prisoner of Tehran, and  Vincent Lam, author of  Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures, as well as CITE’s own Aggie Maksimowska, author of Giant, will be giving readings from their new works. Please reserve $185 of PD funds for the conference.

Call for Presenters

The CITE 2013 team is looking for creative, diverse presenters to further thinking and influence pedagogy regarding our conference theme Global Perspectives; Individual Voices.  The attached poster can be printed for your school’s use. We are seeking presentations of approximately 75 minutes that may focus on the following questions, or suit the conference theme in other unique ways.

·         How can global citizenship be fostered in the English classroom?

·         How do we encourage our students to find their own voices as part of a global environment?

·         How can literature be used as a way to understand the self in the world?

·         Can you write on global issues without being ethnocentric?

·         Does reading global literature create a false sense of cultural understanding?

·         What does Canadian literature mean anymore?

For further information, or to submit your proposal, please contact Maggie Hanrahan at mhanrahan@appleby.on.ca.  The deadline for submissions is Monday, December 10th, 2012.

InCITE Writing Prompt

Please see the attached poster. Remember that a teacher (rather than the student) must email the entries, and only one submission per grade band is permitted.  Students are asked to ensure that the writing is polished and ready to be published when submitted. The deadline is Friday March 1, 2013.

InCITE  - Art Submissions Needed

In addition to writing, the InCITE publication also features student artwork (don’t worry about trying to match the art to students’ writing). Photography and art images must be sent to cpacaud@scs.on.ca by Friday March 1, 2013.

InCITE 2013 Writing Competition

Open to all CIS students in grades 7 to 12. The 2012 InCITE publication can still be purchased for $15 by emailing Ellen Palmer Epalmer@appleby.on.ca

The Prompt:

Using Google Earth, spin the globe, stop it on a random destination, and zoom in for a closer look! Use this location as the setting for your writing. Feel free to fictionalize beyond what can be seen through Google Earth. You might be a resident of the location you have landed upon, a visitor from another country, or a tourist from another planet. You are limited only by your own creativity, but be consistent with the details you see through Google Earth. Please be sure to include the exact coordinates as a subtitle to your submission, so that readers can travel to your destination to see the location that inspired your writing.

Guidelines:

Please send us your top entry for each of the following grades:

Grades 7-8, Grades 9-10, Grades 11-12.

1st, 2nd and 3rd place cash prizes for each age group will be awarded.

Student entries should fit one of the following categories:

Poetry (up to120 lines); Short Story, Personal Essay, or Dramatic Scene (up to 1200 words).

Prizes will be awarded at each grade level: $100 (First place), $75 (Second), $50 (Third).

Please encourage artwork submissions related to the theme as well!

The best artwork submitted will be featured on the cover and will win a prize!

Submission Information:

All submissions should be sent to Claire Pacaud (cpacaud@scs.on.ca). A representative from each school should send that school’s entries individually as separate file attachments. The filename of the document should indicate the school and grade. In the file itself, include the work’s title, the student's name, grade, and school.

The submission deadline is March 1, 2013.

Jennifer D. Klein, Plenary Speaker of the CITE 2013 conference, has generously produced this year’s prompt.  Jennifer comes to us via World Leadership School with a wealth of experience in both local and international classrooms. She is the Director of Educational Development for the Research Journalism Initiative (RJI), an educational non-profit that facilitates creative expression among Palestinian young people and the use of their media projects in American classrooms. She holds a BA from Bard College and an MA from the University of Colorado at Boulder, both in Literature and Creative Writing. She has taught college and high school English both in North and Central America. Jennifer has an extensive background in curriculum development and experiential, project-based learning.
