SHAREABLES &  PD OPPORTUNITIES

THE STRATFORD FESTIVAL can send actors to do a virtual class visit. We had an actress from Macbeth do a mini workshop and a Q & A with our Grade 9s. We also had Mike Shara come into the Grade 10 class for The Merry Wives of Windsor, and on Friday, Amaka Umeh is coming to the Grade 12 class. She was supposed to play Hamlet this season as the first black female to do so at Stratford. (Note: it becomes more expensive if you have more than 40 students.)

REPORT ON

CITE SOCIAL WITH

NORA YOUNG

february 2016

@ St. Clement's School

The CITE Social on February 4, was a great success. CITE teachers met CIS Ontario colleagues while sampling some wine, beer, home-made gourmet food and tasty desserts. Thank you to St. Clement's School for hosting the elegant affair.

Nora Young's Presentation

Nora Young, CBC radio host of Spark, discussed the rapid technological changes in our world, and how more than ever students' critical thinking skills are imperative. Adolescents must recognize that media is constructed and question what they see. Young admitted that technology does make our lives easier and explained how it can help with communications in war-torn countries; however, Young also showed how intrusive technology has become, and she provided some interesting forecasts such as how soon social media sites like Facebook will mainly consist of video posts. She also discussed how there is a marked increase in tracking apps, resulting in the loss of our privacy. Everyone is collecting our personal data, including the government, companies and research analysts. For example, the app gigapixel can zoom in and identify one face in an image containing thousands of people. This is bad news for people who particpate in violent demonstrations! She also discussed how technological advances mean that teachers will need to keep up with the changes, how it will affect everything for studentsfrom their social interactions to changing career options. Click here for more on Nora Young.

AGM Summary - guest author Kate Pullinger
Thank you to Upper Canada College for hosting the CITE AGM. It was timely that author Kate Pullinger was visiting from England and was able to attend the meeting to speak to us about her recent projects and book. If you were unable to attend, please visit the 14-18 Letter to an Unknown Soldiersite, a project commemorating the start of World War I. Over 20,000 people from all over the UK wrote a letter to the soldier. Kate also discussed the importance of the written word in modern times and showed her digital interactive novelInanimate Alice, which combines text and technology. (Episodes are available for free.) Last, Kate talked about her new novel Landing Gear, a tale of Yacub, a stowaway, whose life literally collides with Harriet’s, when he falls from a plane’s landing gear onto the hood of her car.
Click the image of Kate Pullinger to watch a video excerpt of her talk at the CITE AGM.
